Wright price // Rare urn goes for $260,000

Former Gov. James R. Thompson succeeded in his quest for a FrankLloyd Wright-designed urn by paying $260,000 at a New York auctionThursday, nearly $100,000 more than the coveted planters have everfetched - and $72,000 more than Thompson brought with him.

"I thought it would cost $150,000, $160,000," Thompson said. "Ihad $188,000 in my pocket, but I also had some angels in my pocket -some guys who told me they would be there if I needed them."

After casting the winning bid, Thompson called friends inChicago from a telephone room at Christie's auction house. He almostimmediately recovered the shortfall and was back in Chicago by 2:30p.m. The urn will arrive …
