Vic: Man said he killed wife, mother-in-law in self-defence

MELBOURNE, April 3 AAP - A man told police he killed his wife and mother-in-law inself-defence after they attacked him as he slept, the Victorian Supreme Court heard today.

But Crown prosecutor, Sue Pullen, told the court the women died from strangulationand head injuries caused by a blunt instrument.

Nicola (Nicola) Spina, 55, has pleaded not guilty to the murders of Maria Grace Spina,49, and her mother Giovanna Persico, 72, in October 2001.

Ms Pullen said the women's bodies were found in the back of Spina's four-wheel drivewhen police stopped him near his home in Police Road, Mulgrave, on October 23 that year.

She said Spina told police that in the early hours of October 21, he was asleep inbed when his wife punched him in the head, waking him up.

He claimed his mother-in-law joined in the attack, in which he was punched and scratched.

Spina also claimed he got out of bed and pushed the women "very hard" against a walland threw them onto the ground.

But Ms Pullen said the Crown would argue the women were killed in an act of "intense anger".

She said Spina complained to others that his wife's family interfered in his marriage.

The trial, before Justice Tim Smith, continues.
