DECA team in top 10 at national competition ; Category was business, marketing research

Students representing the city school district placed in the Top10 at an international business and marketing competition heldearlier this month in Orlando, Fla.

Senior Michael Fetzer and junior Tania Abousaid, and members of their high school's chapter of Distributive Education Clubs of America, teamed up in the business and merchandising operations research category of the competition, which hosted 15,000 students from 15 countries.

Michael and Tania wrote a 30-page Internet marketing proposal fora business of their choice and presented their strategy to the executive officers of the company, who were acting in a role-playing capacity.

The students presented the company with a mobile phoneapplication, a Facebook page and YouTube advertisements. They alsowrote a company jingle with choreographed hand gestures.

Students Paul Lukasik, Jenna Brzozkowski, Katie Gorman and Zach Niemiec also competed in categories that including hotel and lodging management, apparel and accessories marketing, and marketing management.

The North Tonawanda chapter ofDECA was established 10 years agoand currently logs about 50 members. Thirteen of the 17 studentswho advanced to the national level of the competition earlier thisyear took home medals.
